Review Verdict:

The ResMed AirSense 11 series are highly popular and sleek automatic CPAP machines and the latest offerings by ResMed currently available in Australia. They offer an integrated heated humidifier as well as cellular and bluetooth connectivity. Known for their straightforward setup and use, these are considered the standard for CPAP machines. If you are interested in a CPAP machine that does it all, we will say it from the start – you can’t go wrong with the ResMed AirSense 11 series.

For those wondering what’s new in the ResMed AirSense 11 compared to its predecessor, the AirSense 10, ResMed has furnished its latest offering with advanced data transmission capabilities, including via Bluetooth, exclusive myAir app features, and integrated the ‘For Her’ algorithm so that there is now only one AutoSet machine. This in addition to its new build, design and power efficiency updates makes using the AirSense 11 the definitive ResMed CPAP experience in 2023.

The RedMed AirSense 11 is a high quality machine with solid build quality which makes it durable and enjoyable to use. It is light, weighing in at only 1.13kg and, despite not being a travel-sized CPAP machine, is reasonably portable too. Whilst not the quietest machine on the market, the ResMed AirSense 11 is an extremely quiet CPAP machine and will not interrupt your sleep or the sleep of your partner.

Overall, there is no area in which the ResMed AirSense 11 series fails to live up to its title as the gold-standard of CPAP machines; ResMed is not the most popular CPAP brand on the market without reason. Its shortcomings are few and it is a complete package which is sure to help you to treat your sleep apnoea.

The ResMed AirSense 11 Review: An In-depth Look at AutoSet and Elite Models

The AirSense 11 series is the latest evolution in the esteemed lineage of CPAP machines from ResMed Australia, signifying an enhanced and streamlined experience for sleep apnoea treatment.

Our AirSense 11 review aims to provide an unbiased and thorough look at this innovative device. So, whether you’re a sleep specialist, a current user considering an upgrade, or someone newly diagnosed and investigating treatment options, we’ve got you and your sleep apnoea therapy covered in our AirSense 11 review.

AirSense 11 Series Features Two Models – AutoSet and Elite

For those grappling with obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) or other conditions impacting their breathing, a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP)  machine is a real game changer. As awareness about sleep apnoea has skyrocketed, so has the demand for devices like the APAP (automatic pressure CPAP) machine. As a result, major brands like ResMed Australia are improving their efforts to make these life-improving machines more accessible.

Despite the crowded scene, the ResMed AirSense series has won the hearts of sleep apnoea patients worldwide, being a state-of-the-art PAP device packed with cutting-edge features that align with the expectations and tech-savviness of today’s consumers.

Both models in the AirSense 11 series come with a two-year warranty and integrate a built-in HumidAir heated humidifier for heightened comfort. There’s also optional heated tubing for further adaptability. In addition, Australian customers can look forward to an extended three-year warranty through the Sleepvantage ResMed program, for a total of five years.

AirSense 11 series combines the best digital health technology with effective therapy modes. The machines are crafted to make the start of – and sticking to – sleep apnoea therapy more accessible and more convenient than ever before. Each AirSense 11 machine comes loaded with features aimed at delivering comfortable treatment. Plus, there are a host of tools and myAir access to keep you motivated and on track during your sleep apnoea treatment journey.

AirSense 11 AutoSet

The AirSense 11 AutoSet leads as the APAP model in this series. Using ResMed’s clinically validated algorithms, this model auto-adjusts airflow pressure levels breath-by-breath, tailoring the therapy to your unique needs. The AutoSet model’s versatility shines with its choice of PAP therapy modes: AutoSet, AutoSet ‘For Her’, or fixed-pressure CPAP mode.

In addition, the AutoSet model is equipped with advanced event detection, capable of identifying and reporting Respiratory Effort Related Arousals (RERA), Central Sleep Apnoea (CSA), and Cheyne-Stokes Respiration (CSR). These features offer physicians crucial insights into a patient’s health status and progress in therapy.

Support comes from ResMed’s Air Solutions – a comprehensive suite of tools, including ResMed AirView, a remote monitoring platform, and myAir, a patient engagement app. These tools have been shown to increase 90-day CMS-defined therapy compliance to 87%, compared to 70% when monitoring with AirView alone. Furthermore, myAir users tend to sleep one hour longer on average each night during the initial 90 days of therapy compared to other CPAP users. This array of sophisticated functionalities and supportive systems underscores the AutoSet model’s dedication to improving user experience and therapy outcomes.

AirSense 11 Elite

The AirSense 11 Elite stands out as a premium fixed-pressure CPAP with Advanced Event Detection (AED) and Sleep Onset Detection. AED allows the device to identify other breathing problems, such as Central Sleep Apnoea (CSA) or Cheyne-Stokes Respiration (CSR), broadening its therapeutic reach. The Sleep Onset Detection function works in sync with the AutoRamp feature, initiating therapy at a lower, more comfortable setting and gradually elevating to a consistent level once the patient has fallen asleep. This thoughtful combination of features sets the Elite model apart, showcasing its focus on enhancing user comfort while ensuring efficient sleep therapy.

Regardless of your chosen model, both AirSense 11 machines prioritise comfort and simplicity. They integrate features like AutoRamp, Expiratory Pressure Relief (EPR), SmartStart, and SmartStop, enhancing the therapy experience and promoting better adherence to treatment.

Superior Design and Build Quality of the AirSense 11

The ResMed AirSense 11 series beautifully merges form with function in its sleek and modern design. Sporting a more streamlined shape than its predecessor, the AirSense 10, this machine takes an aesthetic step forward without compromising its robust build quality. Boasting a durable enclosure, the AirSense 11 promises longevity for users who need a CPAP machine that lasts.

Moreover, the design of the AirSense 11 keeps user comfort in mind, with features like an integrated heated humidifier (and an option to add a removable water chamber). For frequent travellers or those who prefer a more compact machine, the device offers an optional side cover that replaces the humidifier tub, effectively shrinking the machine’s size.

An Intuitive Touch Screen Interface

One key design innovation lies in the device’s intuitive touchscreen interface. Gone are the days of the click-and-turn action we saw with the AirSense 10. With the tap of a finger, the AirSense 11 provides easy navigation through the settings menu, adjusting humidity levels, tube temperature, and climate control.

But physical button lovers, don’t worry. The machine’s large on/off button means stopping and starting your therapy is hassle-free; just push the big button.

The Ultimate Travel Companion: Unpacking the Portability of the ResMed AirSense 11

Whether you frequently travel or prefer a more compact device, the AirSense 11 is designed to meet your needs. As we mentioned earlier, the design of the machine includes an optional side cover that can replace the humidifier tub, effectively downsizing the device. This versatility makes travel more convenient and ensures the device works optimally in any situation.

Additionally, the ResMed AirSense 11 is approved by the FAA for use during flights across the United States, making it a perfect partner for those long-haul journeys. And despite being a piece of medical equipment, it won’t count towards the airline’s carry-on limit, a sigh of relief for travellers.

However, it’s always advisable to familiarise yourself with specific airline policies regarding the in-flight use of CPAP devices, especially in Australia, where you’ll need to complete the necessary medical clearance form to use any battery-powered assistive device during your flight.

Breathe Easy With These ResMed AirSense 11 Features

Both models in the ResMed AirSense 11 series offer impressive features, positioning them as top-tier solutions for sleep apnoea therapy. The AutoSet and Elite (fixed-pressure) models incorporate comfort features that have earned ResMed its esteemed reputation while introducing unique functions, such as Expiratory Pressure Relief (EPR) and AutoRamp, to create a therapy experience that’s both comfortable and adaptive to your needs.

AutoRamp

The AutoRamp feature matches your body’s natural process of falling asleep. Initially, the machine delivers a lower pressure as you drift off for added comfort as you fall asleep. AutoRamp gradually increases the pressure to a consistent level as your sleep deepens. This smooth transition ensures that your comfort isn’t compromised, offering a more naturally comfortable start to your therapy.

In the AirSense 11 series, the AutoRamp feature is further enhanced with Sleep Onset Detection. When the machine senses that you’ve fallen asleep, it gently raises your airflow to your settings.

Expiratory Pressure Relief

Further enhancing user comfort is the Expiratory Pressure Relief (EPR) function. This innovative feature gently lowers the air pressure when you exhale, mimicking your natural breathing rhythm for a less intrusive experience. By decreasing the pressure during exhalation, EPR ensures your breathing feels more natural, particularly when the device is set to high pressure.

SmartStart and Stop

Additionally, the SmartStart and SmartStop features add convenience to your routine by automatically starting or stopping therapy when you put on or remove your  CPAP mask.

Mask Fit

SmartStart and Stop are also complemented by the Mask Fit feature, which ensures that your mask fits correctly, optimising therapy effectiveness.

These features help to alleviate common discomforts associated with CPAP therapy, such as a dry mouth or abrupt pressure changes, making your treatment as smooth as possible.

Decoding the User Experience: How the AirSense 11 Enhances Your Sleep Therapy Journey

Using either of the ResMed AirSense 11 machines is nothing short of empowering. This device brings sophisticated sleep apnoea therapy into the comfort of your home, making it simple and intuitive to take charge of your treatment with its user-friendly interface and intelligent features.

From the beginning, the AirSense 11 shows its dedication to creating an intuitive user experience thanks to the machine’s built-in Personal Therapy Assistant, which walks users through each step, making the process less daunting. Moreover, the machine’s touchscreen interface makes navigating the device and adjusting settings remarkably straightforward.

The combination of smart technology, personalised guidance, and remote access to therapy data gives users unprecedented control and comfort in managing their sleep apnoea therapy. With a ResMed AirSense 11 machine, treatment isn’t merely about compliance – it’s about enhancing your overall quality of life.

Breaking Boundaries with Unmatched Connectivity and the Advanced myAir App

A unique advantage of the ResMed AirSense 11 series is its cutting-edge connectivity. While it’s commonplace for our devices to be connected to the internet, this level of digital integration isn’t always available with medical gear. The  AirSense 11 is set to change that.

Built-in Bluetooth and 4G/5G cellular technology power the AirSense 11 series, bringing the familiarity and convenience of our digital devices to sleep apnoea treatment. This advanced connectivity does more than simply enhance the user experience—it also empowers healthcare providers with real-time access to therapy data.

Upon opening your AirSense 11 carrying case, a quick start guide invites you to connect your device to your smartphone. Once you’re online, the user-friendly myAir app—accessible in the US and Canada—puts you in the driver’s seat of your therapy management. It feeds you daily sleep scores, tips for increased comfort, and personalised therapy feedback. This wealth of information empowers you to steer your treatment towards success, ultimately improving your sleep quality.

But don’t worry if you prefer not to use the smart app—your AirSense 11 will still work perfectly fine without myAir connectivity.

The AirSense 11 machines can also seamlessly transmit your therapy data to AirView, a secure, cloud-based platform accessible to your sleep specialist. This instant access to therapy data facilitates quick adjustments to your treatment, fostering a more personalised and proactive approach to your sleep apnoea care.

The AirSense 11 series is also compatible with Bluetooth-supported Pulse Oximetry devices, and can track the device’s data during operation and then integrate this into your sleep data. This data is then available to your sleep specialist on the ResMed AirView platform.

And to ensure your device is always up-to-date, the AirSense 11 machines come equipped with over-the-air software updates, like your smartphone. This way, the latest advancements and features are always a tap away.

The ResMed AirSense 11 series sets a new benchmark for sleep apnoea machines, making them more intuitive and integrated into our digitally connected lives. And that’s a win for everyone—users and healthcare providers alike.

Comprehensive Customer Support and Assistance: The AirSense 11 Advantage

The ResMed AirSense 11 device provides comprehensive customer support. ResMed AirSense 11 users will have access to ResMed’s online support program through AirView as well as myAir and its mobile app which includes a daily sleep score for progress tracking. The myAir app now also includes exclusive AirSense 11 features, such as a Personal Therapy Assistant that guides users through equipment setup, troubleshooting common issues and offers personalised feedback on therapy progress, especially getting used to therapy in the initial stages.

Another myAir feature exclusive to the AirSense 11 is the Care Check-In feature which gives you coaching and assistance tailored to meet your personal needs.

With this extensive support network, the ResMed AirSense 11 ensures you are not navigating your therapy journey alone. You can tap into expert advice and guidance right from the comfort of your home, ensuring you get the most out of your sleep apnoea therapy with the ResMed AirSense 11.

A Look into the Maintenance and Cleaning Requirements of the AirSense 11

In our extensive experience with CPAP machines, regular upkeep and cleaning contributed significantly to optimal machine performance and a healthier therapy environment. It also increased the machine’s longevity, making ease of cleaning a worthwhile consideration when selecting a machine for sleep apnoea therapy as you are more likely to comply with cleaning your machine regularly. With that being said, we are happy to report that one of the standout qualities of the ResMed AirSense 11 is its easy maintenance and cleaning design, a feature that users will undoubtedly appreciate.

The device includes a disposable filter conveniently located at the back. In our experience, replacing it monthly or as needed helps ensure the air remains clean and protects the motor from dust.

The machine’s tubing, available in heated or non-heated versions, calls for a weekly cleaning routine. This process is straightforward: soak the tubing in warm, soapy water, scrub it gently with a hose brush, rinse thoroughly, and let it air dry. From our experience, hanging it over a shower rod proves effective for drying.

Similarly, the standard water chamber requires weekly cleaning. It can be washed with warm, soapy water using a soft bristle brush for the interior. Once cleaned, it should be air-dried away from direct sunlight. Please note that while the standard water chamber is not dishwasher-safe, users who opt for the cleanable water chamber variant can conveniently clean it in the top rack of their dishwasher.

ResMed AirSense 11 vs AirSense 10: A Comprehensive Comparison

As a successor to the well-regarded ResMed AirSense 10 AutoSet, the ResMed AirSense 11 device demonstrates how thoughtful upgrades and effective updates can enhance an already successful model.

One of the standout upgrades we noticed in the AirSense 11 is the transition from a click-and-turn action to a fully interactive colour touchscreen. This development significantly elevates the user experience, making the device more intuitive even for first-timers.

Unlike the ResMed AirSense 10, the AirSense 11 does not come included with an SD card. Its data is stored using internal memory and, when an SD card is inserted, the machine copies the data from internal memory onto the SD card. Otherwise, data from the ResMed AirSense 11 is obtained wirelessly via either its cellular connectivity and AirView or Bluetooth connectivity with the myAir mobile app.

Besides its excellent data transmission options, we also appreciated the addition of over-the-air software updates in the AirSense 11. These additions modernise the device and align it perfectly with the needs and wants of today’s tech-savvy users.

The default setting for minimum pressure on the ResMed AirSense 11 AutoSet is now 5cmH2O. Previously, on the ResMed AirSense 10 AutoSet, this was set to 4cmH2O by default. However, like the ResMed AirSense 10 AutoSet, the ResMed AirSense 11 AutoSet can still be set to a minimum pressure delivery of 4cmH2O and a maximum of 20cmH2O.

The two devices also share the same algorithm, although the “AutoSet for Her” algorithm from the ResMed AirSense 10 AutoSet For Her is now included in the AirSense 11 AutoSet. In other words, there is no need to purchase a separate device to have access to this feature.

This mode illustrates ResMed’s commitment to inclusivity and personalised sleep apnoea treatment. Similarly, the Personal Therapy Assistant and Care Check-In program, new features exclusive to the AirSense 11 series, help guide users through setting up and maintaining their therapy.

From a design perspective, the AirSense 11 presents a sleeker, more compact look and feel, which will certainly appeal to users who appreciate aesthetics or are constrained by space.

Yet, while the AirSense 11 brings new features, it doesn’t abandon the characteristics that made the AirSense 10 beloved by users. The built-in heated humidifier, intelligent Climate Control, AutoRamp, Expiratory Pressure Relief (EPR), and SmartStart are still integral to the new model. An improvement on this is the separate toggling off of SmartStart and SmartStop, a welcome change for those who found the combined SmartStop on the AirSense 10 a bit too sensitive.

Another welcome improvement is to the cleaning process of the AirSense 11’s humidifier. Both the ResMed AirSense 10 and ResMed AirSense 11 have a humidifier with the same capacity of 380mL. However, unlike on the AirSense 10, the silicon fitting between the humidifier tub and the inlet seal of the machine is external on the ResMed AirSense 11. This means that, not only is it cleanable, but when you purchase a new humidifier tub, it will come with a brand new silicon fitting.

Just like the ResMed AirSense 10, the motor in the ResMed AirSense 11 is rated for a 21,500 hour lifetime. With an average use of 8 hours per night, this means that the motor is rated to run for over 7 years.

Another similarity between the two devices is their warranty. Both machines come with 2 Years’ Warranty which can be extended to 5 Years if you sign your machine up for Sleepvantage.

Newly introduced to the AirSense 11 series is the Test Drive feature. It is designed to ease first-time CPAP users into therapy, acknowledging that adjusting to positive airway pressure therapy can initially be challenging.

The ResMed AirSense 11 is significantly more power efficient than the ResMed AirSense 10, making use of only a 65W power supply compared to the 90W power supply on the AirSense 10. Despite this large decrease in power consumption, the ResMed AirSense 11 is still able to provide the effective respiratory care that you expect from ResMed’s machines. Being a more efficient machine, the adventurers among you can expect a longer life out of your portable battery when travelling with the AirSense 11, compared to the AirSense 10.

The blending of traditional and new features makes the ResMed AirSense 11 a top-tier choice for sleep apnoea therapy. It builds upon its predecessor’s solid foundation, pushing the boundaries of what a CPAP machine can offer while catering to the user’s comfort, convenience, and specific needs.

Final ResMed AirSense 11 Review – A Revolutionary Solution for Sleep Apnea Therapy

The ResMed AirSense 11 series, which includes the AutoSet and Elite models, is set to be a game-changer in sleep apnoea therapy for Australia. These two devices artfully combine user-centric design, cutting-edge technology, and personalised treatment, offering a spectrum of features that work in unison to deliver an enhanced and comfortable sleep therapy experience.

What we found particularly appealing is the device’s intuitive colour touchscreen interface. It simplifies setting adjustments, making it an excellent choice for seasoned CPAP users and individuals just beginning their journey with sleep apnoea treatment. The AutoSet model even incorporates the ‘for Her’ mode, demonstrating the series’ inclusivity and broad appeal to a diverse user base.

The AirSense 11 doesn’t compromise functionality or comfort. Integrated features like heated humidification, Expiratory Pressure Relief (EPR), and AutoRamp ensure a smooth and comfortable therapy experience. The device’s robust connectivity enables users to monitor their progress conveniently and gives healthcare professionals remote access to therapy data, thus facilitating tailored and efficient treatment plans.

For travellers or those needing a compact device, the AirSense 11 excels in portability. The innovative design allows replacing the water chamber with a side cover, reducing the device’s size without compromising treatment effectiveness.

The device also impresses with its straightforward maintenance and cleanliness requirements. Regular upkeep guarantees optimal performance and promotes a healthy therapy environment.
